Early Life and Family
Selena Quintanilla, widely known by her stage name Selena, was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., was a former musician, while her mother, Marcella Ofelia Samora, was a homemaker. The family already had two older children and later went on to open a restaurant together. Although Selena grew up speaking English, her father encouraged her to sing in Spanish so she could connect more deeply with the Latino community. In the beginning, she learned song lyrics phonetically, but over time she became fluent in Spanish. Selena started performing at a very young age, and by the time she was around 10 years old, she became the lead singer of her family band, Selena y Los Dinos. The group initially performed at weddings, fairs, and clubs across Texas. Abraham managed and produced the band, which included Selena’s brother Abraham III (A.B. Quintanilla III) on bass guitar and her sister Suzette Quintanilla on drums. Their Tejano music style blended Mexican influences with country and western sounds.Selena y Los Dinos Albums
The Selena Quintanilla family, led by Selena as the main vocalist, released seven albums under the name Selena y Los Dinos. Most of these records were produced through independent labels. The albums Alpha and And the Winner Is… were produced by Manny Guerra of G.P. Productions, a label known for its focus on Tejano music. The album Dulce Amor, which featured original songs written by Selena’s brother, played a major role in introducing Selena to the broader Latin music scene. The seven Selena y Los Dinos albums include: • Mis Primeras Grabaciones (1984) • The New Girl In Town (1985) • Alpha (1986) • Muñequito de Trapo (1986) • And the Winner Is… (1987) • Preciosa (1988) • Dulce Amor (1988)Albums

Selena Quintanilla was shot and killed by Yolanda SaldĂvar in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 31, 1995. She was only 23 years old. Her tragic death sent shockwaves throughout the Latino community, and fans around the world mourned the loss of the beloved singer. Although the tragedy shocked the public, the events leading up to it had been unfolding for years. Selena and SaldĂvar had known each other prior to the murder. After attending one of Selena’s concerts, SaldĂvar encouraged Abraham Quintanilla to establish a fan club for his daughter. The former nurse later became the club’s president and also took on the role of managing Selena’s boutique in San Antonio. On the day of the murder, the two women met in a hotel room to address Selena’s concerns that SaldĂvar had been embezzling money, according to court records. During the meeting, 34-year-old SaldĂvar shot Selena. She surrendered to police later that same day. At her October 1995 trial, SaldĂvar claimed the shooting was accidental. However, she was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. She is currently incarcerated in a maximum-security prison outside of Dallas. Although SaldĂvar became eligible for parole in early 2025, her request was denied on March 30, nearly 30 years after Selena’s death.Legacy
